Home meeting
events : 5.50pm to approx 8.00pm
A warm-up session is followed by
the program of events. Events vary depending on
the age group, but includes runs
from 40m to 1500m, hurdles, high, long and
triple jumps, shot-put, discus and javelin
events. Children compete in age groups
from U6 to U17.
For Tiny Tots (ages 3 and 4) we
run a special program of skill-based
games.
Our home meeting schedule has a
rotation of programs (details included in
the Event Program). This is designed to
give athletes a distribution of events and
an opportunity to record qualifying times
or standards for eligibility to compete in
the SALAA State Individual Championships.
All athletes must compete in at least 50%
of events per meet to count as 1 official
attendance and attend 50% of home meets.
See entry form for qualifying standards.
During the winter season (May to
August), Cross Country running takes place
on Sundays at selected Little Athletic
club grounds. Children compete in
distances of 400m to 3km, depending on
age, and include some interesting and
challenging terrains.

Hot and Wet Weather Policies
If the forecast temperature on the
morning of the meet is 35° to 37°C a
modified program will be run. If the forecast is
38°C or above, then the meeting will be
cancelled. Notice of
cancellation will be put on in Club Notices of
this site, Friday morning.
Please ensure your athlete always
has plenty of water to drink during the
meet and follows Sunsmart
policies.
For all Association events, a Hot
weather program will apply if the forecast
temperature is 36°C or higher.
During wet weather some events may
need to be modified or cancelled.

Parental Involvement
No club can run without the
support from parents and volunteers. To do
this each Friday night, the centre relies
heavily on parent participation. Without
your help this recreation would cease to
exist for our children.
Little Athletics is a
family activity, not a child minding
service. All athletes must be accompanied
by a supervising adult. A drop and go
policy is not safe and will not be
acceptable. An athlete maybe asked to sit
out of competition if no responsible adult
is present.
NB: If your athlete
needs to leave early, please advise the
chaperone before departing, for signing
off.
Tasks that the Centre needs
parents to assist with each Friday night
include:
·
Arena set-up Helpers from 5.15pm
·
Time keepers for running events,
measuring for field events
·
Chaperones to record results for
each age group
·
Cooking the barbeque (Age group
roster)
Please make yourself available
at the start-up of each night and if
you have any special interests please let
the committee know. None of the jobs are onerous but
are essential for the night to run
smoothly.
A handbook ‘HOW TO HELP AT LITTLE
ATHLETICS’ is available from the desk and
provides additional information to that
detailed below.
An introductory course for parents and
senior athletes- 'Introduction to Coaching and
Officals' will be held this year on
Saturday November 20 (12-4pm). Please let us
know if your interested.
Timekeepers:
Have the task of timing all events. Timing
commences from the sight of smoke from the
starting gun and concludes when any part
of the athlete’s torso crosses the finish
line. (not
head, neck, arms or legs).
Times are rounded up to the next
tenth of a second.
e.g.
watch shows 10.18 seconds -
recorded as 10.2 seconds or
watch
shows 10.10 seconds - recorded as 10.1
seconds or
watch
shows 10.11 seconds - recorded as 10.2
seconds.
Chaperones:
At each meeting, children are
grouped based on their age and gender. For
each age group, a parent, acting as a
chaperone, is responsible for recording
each athlete’s performance, ensuring that
the group follows the weekly programme,
and liaises with coaches and starters.
During any programme delays, chaperones
must ensure children rest and take in
fluids. A folder listing registered
children and a pad of tickets is available
in each group’s drink basket.
Officials:
While all parents are required to
help officiate at club meetings, it is
desirable to have some parents qualified
as C Grade officials. This ensures that
events are supervised and judged to the
same standards that our athletes will
experience at SALAA meetings. Parents who would
like the opportunity to gain
qualifications, may do so by attending an
Association Officials Course. This course
will held on Sunday Nov 20, 2010 and takes
approximately 3 hours. Please contact a
committee member if you are interested.

sunscreen. Bucket hats are recommended. If a child is
competing at State-run events, they must
wear their club uniform which includes a
red bucket hat.
It is encouraged that all clothing
that may be removed during competition
have name tags to avoid confusion.

Coaching
Where possible, one event will be
chosen during meetings for attention, and
training provided to all athletes and
parents. Coaches will organise this with
chaperones.
Further athlete coaching will be
available on Mondays throughout the
season, at the track from 5.30pm - 6.30pm
for registered athletes, U9 and above.
**New** for 2011 is Training for U6-U8
4.30 to 5.30pm. If you are
interested, please speak to our Head Coach
- Norm Charles 0401132773.
Norm also runs private coaching during the
week you will need to speak to him about
costs and times if you are interested.
The association holds a Holiday Coaching
Clinic during the January school holidays.
Look out for dates and entry forms on the
SALAA website.

Communication
This website contains a club
notice board with the latest notices and
information. Please check regularly.
At the beginning of
each competition night, the President (or
committee member) will announce current
news that the parents need to know about,
e.g. forthcoming events, achievements. In addition to
this, there is a notice board. Both of
these are important forms of communication
so please listen to the announcements and
read the notices.

Code of Conduct
SALAA has a policy describing the
expected behaviour of athletes, but in
general poor behaviour is not tolerated
and can result in a child being removed
from competition. Parents are also
expected to follow a code of conduct and
volunteers are encouraged to visit the web
site www.playbytherules.net.au.

Insurance
All registered Little Athletes,
coaches and voluntary workers are insured
for Personal Accident and Public Liability
through Australis
Group Underwriting. Cover is provided for
injuries caused solely by active
participation in officially organised
events, practice and training sessions and
official functions including traveling to
and from such events. Parents are
responsible for the Medicare gap.
